Can you convert a photograph to vector?

Not usefully, in most cases. Photographs converted to vector either lose everything that made them a photograph or produce an unmanageable file. If your image is a photo of flat artwork — a printed logo, a drawing, a sign — that converts well. Send it and we'll tell you which you have.

What's the difference between SVG, AI and EPS?

They're different containers for the same vector data. SVG is the web and cutting-machine standard. AI is Adobe Illustrator's editable format. EPS is the long-standing print and screen-printing exchange format. PDF works almost everywhere. Tell us the destination and we'll pick.

Will the vector look exactly like my image?

It will look like a clean version of it. Compression artefacts, soft edges and stray pixels don't carry over — that's the point. Deliberate texture and shading get simplified, so if either matters to your design, mention it in your instructions.

What conversion can and can't recover

Vector conversion works by rebuilding your artwork as mathematical shapes. That works extremely well for anything built out of shapes to begin with: logos, lettering, badges, line art, silhouettes, flat illustration.

It works badly for photographs and heavily textured artwork. A photograph converted to vector becomes either a posterised approximation or a file with tens of thousands of paths — neither is what people want when they ask for it. If that's what you have, we'll say so rather than take the order.

In between sit scans and photographs of flat artwork — a printed logo, a hand-drawn design, an old label. Those convert well, because the underlying artwork is shape-based even if your copy of it isn't.
