What print-ready actually requires

Four things have to be right at once: physical dimensions, resolution at those dimensions, colour, and — for anything printed onto a coloured surface — transparency. A file can be perfect on three and get rejected on the fourth.

Resolution is the one people get wrong most often, because it's meaningless on its own. 300 DPI is not a property of a file; it's a relationship between pixels and physical size. The same image is 300 DPI at three inches and 75 DPI at twelve.

Colour is the one that surprises people most. Screens emit light and printers reflect it, so vivid RGB values — bright blues especially — have no printable equivalent. Better to choose the shift deliberately in advance than discover it on the proof.
