PNGs pick up damage every time they are resaved, resized or pulled off the web: halos around the edges, grey fringing where the transparency used to be, and soft, muddy detail. Why PNG transparency breaks so often
Transparency in a PNG is stored in a separate alpha channel. Almost every way a file gets moved around — pasted into a document, exported from a phone app, screenshotted, run through a converter — throws that channel away and replaces it with whatever colour was behind it.
