A distressed look that actually prints
Distressed designs are some of the best sellers in apparel — and some of the worst DTF files. This tool is built around how a DTF transfer really prints.
No white haze
Every worn spot is 100% transparent. Texture overlays and eraser brushes leave thousands of half-clear pixels, and a DTF printer lays full white under every one of them — a grey haze or a ghost outline. Here, a pixel is either cut or kept exactly as it was.
Nothing peels
Bits of ink the texture breaks off that are too small to hold adhesive powder are removed, and pin-holes too small to stay open under the press are filled back in.
White stays under the colour
Printers lay the white underbase slightly smaller than the colour. A hair-thin strand left by the texture would print with no white under it and look faded, so those are cleaned up too. Your design's own fine lines are kept.
Sized for the shirt
Cracks and specks are measured in millimetres at your print width, so a left-chest logo and a full back get the same natural-looking wear.
14 distress styles
Each style is generated fresh for your design, so no two prints have to look the same. Pick one, set the amount, and click New texture until the wear lands where you want it.
Vintage
Worn patches and fine specks, like a favourite tee after years of washing.
Light wear
A few small worn spots. Still reads as clean, with just enough age.
Vintage wash
No big holes: the ink is thinned unevenly, like a shirt washed a hundred times.
Retro halftone
Worn areas break into dots, like a thin 70s or 80s screen print.
Old band tee
Fine cracks, worn patches and specks: the concert tee from the back of the closet.
Cracked ink
Large plates with fine cracks, like old plastisol that has been stretched.
Heavy grunge
Big rough knockouts, scratches and cracks. Loud and gritty, for bold designs.
Sun-faded
A fine speckled fade, like a print left in a shop window all summer.
Rain
Fine vertical streaks, as if the ink had run. Medium wear.
Leather
Fine, wavy horizontal grain. The lightest of the line textures.
Splatter
Ink spots, spray and flicks. Removes more ink, so best on bold designs.
Scratched
Scuffs and scratches at random angles, like a tee rubbed against a wall.
Rough edges
Wear eats in from the outline and the middle stays clean, like an old badge.
Sand grit
A fine, even sand grain across the whole print. Subtle and safe for any design.
How to distress a design for DTF
- Start from a clean, transparent PNG at 300 DPI for your print size.
- Choose the width you will actually print: left chest is usually 3.5–4″, an adult front 10–12″, an oversize back 12–14″. The wear scales to match.
- Pick a style and an amount. Vintage at 50–70% suits most designs. Preview it on the shirt colour you print on — wear reads very differently on black than on sand or heather grey.
- Click New texture until the wear lands well, and paint over faces or logo marks with the Protect brush. The texture should age the design, not hide it.
- Download the full-size PNG — tagged with the right DPI for your print — and press.
Questions
- Is the distressed effect generator really free?
- Yes. Preview and full-size download are both free, with no account and no watermark. It runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to run.
- Is my design uploaded?
- No. Your design is processed on your own device and the PNG is created there. Nothing is sent to our servers.
- Why is this better than a grunge texture in Photoshop?
- A texture layer or eraser brush leaves soft, half-transparent pixels and tiny specks. On a DTF transfer those print as a white haze or flecks that wash off. This tool only ever cuts fully clear holes, and removes anything too small to hold.
- Why does the print size matter?
- Wear is sized in real millimetres on the shirt. Tell it the real width and a left-chest logo gets fine, believable wear instead of giant blotches, and a full back doesn't end up with specks too small to print.
- Will my small text be destroyed?
- Not with “Keep small text readable” on: thin letters and fine lines are left alone and the wear goes on the bold areas. For faces or logos, paint over them with the Protect brush and they stay completely clean.
- Can I get a different pattern with the same style?
- Yes. Click New texture for a fresh pattern in the same style, as many times as you like, until the wear lands where you want it.
- Should I remove the background first?
- Yes. The wear is cut out of everything that isn't transparent, so a background box gets worn too. Start from a transparent PNG — the free DTF file checker can remove a plain background in one click.
