Ordering one decal size for every shirt in a run is the quickest way to end up with a print that swallows an XS and looks like a sticker on a 3X. The fix is simple: scale the decal with the shirt.
Here's the size guide we use for front prints on standard adult unisex t-shirts.

Decal size by shirt size
The size is the box the design should fit inside, measured across and down.
- XS (chest 30–32″): 9″ × 9″ (22.9 × 22.9 cm)
- S (chest 34–36″): 10″ × 10″ (25.4 × 25.4 cm)
- M (chest 38–40″): 11″ × 11″ (27.9 × 27.9 cm)
- L (chest 42–44″): 12″ × 12″ (30.5 × 30.5 cm)
- XL (chest 46–48″): 13″ × 13″ (33.0 × 33.0 cm)
- 2X (chest 50–52″): 14″ × 14″ (35.6 × 35.6 cm)
- 3X (chest 54–56″): 15″ × 15″ (38.1 × 38.1 cm)
The rule of thumb: add about one inch of decal for every shirt size up.
These are starting points, not law. Shirt brands cut differently, and a fitted tee has less room across the chest than a boxy one. If you're unsure, lay a ruler on the actual blank before you print.
Your design probably isn't square
The chart gives a square, but most designs are wider than they are tall, or the other way round. Treat the square as the maximum box, and let whichever side hits the edge first decide the size:
- Wide designs (text, logos, banners): set the width to the chart size. A wide logo on a medium is 11″ wide and as tall as it needs to be.
- Tall designs (bottles, figures, portraits): set the height to the chart size and let the width follow. An 11″-tall design can look huge on a chest if you also make it 11″ wide.
- Round designs (badges, emblems): the diameter is the chart size, or a little less. Circles look bigger than squares of the same width.
Always keep the proportions locked when you resize. A stretched design is the first thing customers notice.
Where to place it
- Centre it left to right on the chest.
- Start about 3–4″ below the collar on adult shirts. Placing it too low is the most common mistake: it ends up on the stomach.
- Keep everything inside the box. Small bits that stick out near the armpits or the collar seam can crack or press badly.
Want a bolder look? Go up half an inch to an inch. Want something subtle? Go down the same amount. Either way, stay consistent across the run so the shirts look like a set.
One size for the whole order?
Printing seven decal sizes for one order of 40 shirts isn't always practical. A common middle ground:
- One size for S to XL (around 11″), and
- one bigger size for 2X and 3X (around 13–14″).
That's two sizes on the gang sheet instead of seven, and nobody notices the difference across S to XL. For youth or XS-heavy orders, add a smaller 9″ version.
How many pixels each size needs
For a sharp DTF print you want 300 DPI at the printed size. That means:
- 9″ → 2,700 px
- 10″ → 3,000 px
- 11″ → 3,300 px
- 12″ → 3,600 px
- 13″ → 3,900 px
- 14″ → 4,200 px
- 15″ → 4,500 px
That's pixels across the artwork itself, not across the canvas. Empty transparent space around the design doesn't count, and it makes the design print smaller than you planned.
A file that's 3,000 px wide prints perfectly on a medium but goes soft on a 3X. Check before you send it: our free DPI calculator tells you the real DPI at any print size.
Putting several sizes on one sheet
Once you know your sizes, put them all on one gang sheet. The free gang sheet builder lets you add one design, duplicate it, and set each copy to a different size: an 11″ for the S–XL shirts and a 14″ for the 2X–3X. It packs them onto your film and exports a print-ready PDF or PNG.
Before printing, run each design through the DTF file checker. It catches the problems that ruin transfers, like near-invisible background pixels that print as a box.
Quick checklist
- Pick the decal size from the shirt size, about 1″ per size step.
- Let the longest side of the design hit the chart size; keep proportions locked.
- Place it centred, 3–4″ below the collar.
- Make sure the artwork is 300 DPI at the largest size you'll print.
- Gang the sizes together on one sheet.
If your file is too small for the size you need, or it's blurry when you scale it up, send it to us: we redraw and vectorize designs so they print sharp at any size, from $3.
